(Editorial Comment-The Centre for Internet & Society has reported that two posts related to recent Assam riots published on our site have been blocked by the Government of India. At the stroke of the midnight hour UPA govt decides to block twitter handles of many who dissent and challenge their policies. Given the cheer leading role played by the mainstream media in this shameful exercise we only wish to record this development as it is unfolding in the public domain..)

Following is part of the statement by Barbarindian ( A dear friend of CRI and a relentless critic of the UPA) on the ban on free speech by Fascist Sonia Gandhi Government. We agree with Barbarindian’s call on this

Between August 18 and August 22, 2012, the Fascist Sonia Gandhi led UPA II Government directed ISPs to block several websites and twitter accounts, including mine. While the so called ‘block’ mostly remains ineffectual, it is the intent that counts. Also, it is likely they will resort to even more drastic measures, including arm twisting Twitter Inc. into complying with their block request at a more fundamental level

Coming at a time it did, this blocking reeks of opportunism, vendetta and suggests an unholy alliance between certain sections of the mainstream media, religious bodies with vested interests and the ruling political outfit. It reflects a callous disregard for the safety of our North Eastern brethren and an utter contempt for priorities in Governance – not to mention ineptitude of epic proportions.  Thus, by imposing this ban on free speech citing specious excuses, this Government has lost what little legitimacy it had left.

There is no doubt in our mind that for the welfare of the nation this Government needs to be summarily dismissed, the sooner the better and appeal to every Indian to bring this about.

-I appeal to Government officials and bureaucrats and intelligence officials not to participate in and cooperate with illegal measures to silence critics. This is not 1975, the internet has long memories.

– I appeal to junior journalists to expose the malpractices in their media organizations such as gross distortion of facts, suppression of news and propaganda.

– I appeal to international journalists to write the truth uncolored by the prejudices acquired through osmosis in the capital’s seductively charming social circles and reject establishment dogma.

– I appeal to common citizens to vote against these fascists at every level and on every opportunity.

– Last but not the least, my heartiest thanks to my friends and well wishers for coming forward with such overwhelming support. This will never be forgotten.

To paraphrase one of the greatest strategist and leader of all time,

We shall go on to the end. We shall fight them on Facebook, we shall fight them on blogs and websites, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength on twitter, we shall defend our freedom of speech, whatever the cost may be.
